Shakti is a mother, mother-in-law, step-mother, wife, and grandmother. She is the Managing Director and founder of NewLeaf Counselling Services.
Shakti believes we come more fully into our own lives when we understand ourselves better. She knows that our issues in the world are not lived out in isolation but often are a result of a complex web of social systems that interact around us. With Shakti, as you seek solutions to your problems, you will explore your place in those broader social systems.
Shakti was a social worker from 1990 to 2020 and received a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Psychology and Counselling from St. Stephen’s College in Edmonton in 2013. She is a member in good standing with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association , the voluntary governing body that licenses and registers counsellors across Canada. She is also registered with the Association of Counselling Therapists of Alberta.
Shakti is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy and uses this in all her work. Shakti is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (C.Hyp) and can utilize hypnotherapy as a tool in some counselling sessions. She is also trained and experienced in providing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to assist with recovery from trauma.
Shakti specializes in Couple’s / Marriage Counselling using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy as well as Family Counselling with adult children and their parents using Emotionally Focused Family Therapy. Much of Shakti’s work is trauma informed and nurtured by Attachment Theories.
It’s difficult to know how many sessions will be needed for you to feel better but usually clients know when they are feeling better and when they no longer need to attend counselling. Throughout your time with Shakti, she will continue to discuss whether you are working on the correct goals, or whether it’s necessary / helpful to re-focus the work you’re doing together.
