Appointments

All individual appointments are typically scheduled for 50 minutes, unless otherwise arranged. Family or couple counselling sessions generally extend to 70 minutes. Clients commonly meet with their counsellor weekly or biweekly, guided by the severity of the issue they wish to address. The overall duration of treatment is influenced by several factors, primarily the seriousness of the concern in question.

What to Expect in Counselling

During our sessions at NewLeaf Counselling services, you can anticipate a compassionate, attentive environment where your therapist will actively listen to your story. To gain a comprehensive understanding of your circumstances, your therapist will pose thoughtful questions. At times, you may be given tasks to complete independently after your sessions conclude.

The duration of your therapy journey is variable, depending on the complexity and resolution of your challenges. The essence of counselling lies in offering you an impartial ally who provides professional insights and recommendations. A successful therapeutic experience hinges on the relationship; much like selecting any healthcare provider, it is crucial that you feel safe, comfortable, and eventually build trust with your therapist. Occasionally, the suitability of the fit between you and your therapist is clear in the first session, while other times, it may require a few meetings to gauge compatibility.

Understanding the Role and Qualifications of Counsellors

Counsellors are skilled professionals dedicated to providing guidance on personal, social, and psychological challenges. This diverse field includes various specializations such as psychologists and social workers.

Typically, counsellors hold a Master's degree in counselling and psychology and are affiliated with a recognized professional accrediting body.

Notable accrediting organizations include the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association —which our team member Shakti Allen is a member of—the College of Alberta Psychologists, and the Alberta College of Social Workers. These institutions establish rigorous educational requirements and uphold a strict code of ethics and standards for practice.

Confidentiality

All information shared in your sessions will be treated with strict confidentiality. Your therapist will maintain casenotes, but these are securely stored.

Confidentiality may be limited in certain circumstances. For instance, if a third party is funding your counselling services, such as through an Employee Assistance Program, they may require a report. Additionally, if there is any suspicion during your treatment that a child under 18 is at risk of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, this must be reported to the appropriate authorities. Similarly, if there is a concern that someone’s life—be it yours or another's—might be in danger, this too must be reported. Lastly, if a therapist were to receive a court subpoena, they are obliged to provide the requested information.
