R. Shakti Allen
I have been a social worker since 1990 and received a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Counselling and Psychotherapy from St. Stephen’s College in Edmonton in 2013. I am a member in good standing with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association , the voluntary governing body that licenses and registers counsellors across Canada. I am also a Registered Social Worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
I believe we come more fully into our own lives when we understand ourselves better. I know that our issues in the world are not lived out in isolation, but often are a result of a complex web of social systems that interact around us. I am a mother, mother-in-law, step-mother, wife, and grandmother. I live in a collaborative family and interact in a collaborative community.
I am a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (C.Hyp) and will utilize hypnotherapy as a tool in some counselling sessions. I am also trained and experienced in providing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to assist with recovery from trauma.
I am a Registered Psychologist with twenty years of experience working with families, children, teens, and adults. I am honoured to be able to be part of such deep and meaningful conversations with so many people. Relationship is the basis for my therapy; the relationship that I develop with you as well as other relationships in your life.
Much of my practice is based attachment theory and a strong belief that people need to feel connected. This is a big part of why I have focused my more recent training on Theraplay (Level two training) – working with parents and children together in play, and Emotion Focused Therapy (completed Externship and most core skills, plus additional trainings on Emotion Focused family Therapy) – for couples and families. Shifting how you relate to the people you care about the most in your life helps you find meaning, and shapes how you think and feel about yourself.
I am also trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy to address emotional blocks that we all have at times and that interfere with your desired change at a deeper level.
In therapy you and I determine the destination, the road map, and set the pace together. I use my knowledge, skills, experience, and connection with you to walk with you on the path and give you a boost over the blocks along the way. In sessions we may play, laugh, cry, follow guided meditations, sit and talk with purpose depending on what fits best. It is very important that you are comfortable with me as a therapist and can speak openly. The only way to know that is to connect. It can be difficult to take the first steps to reach out, yet most people are glad they did.
